A Theology of Praise: Breakthrough Miracle Moment

Today we are going to look at the song, "Breakthrough Miracle Moment" by Passion.  This particular song has continued to dwell in my mind more and more upon repeated listens.   It also has some unique lyrics and chord structures that make it stand out in today's worship music.

The odds are stacked against me
I'm surrounded on all sides
But I've heard you can part the waters
So in your name come and turn the tide
I'm staring at this mountain
No chance I'm getting through
But I've heard they can melt before You
So in Your name I'm asking it to move
This first verses begin by setting up the stage for a seemingly impossible obstacle to overcome.   Why are the odds stacked against us?   Romans 3:23 "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."   Or perhaps it is just a reminder to us as believers that we are faced against such opposition from the world that what kind of chance do we have to make it through difficulties we face.   It paints a picture of waters on all sides and nowhere to go like the Israelites and the Red Sea or a picture of a mountain too big to move.  It also shows a picture of a person who is hanging on just in case there could be hope despite the likeliness of our situation.   I John 5:5, "Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?"   The only hope we have is in Jesus.
Let that breakthrough miracle power pour out
I need a breakthrough miracle moment right now
Only in You and with You my victory is found
Bring that breakthrough miracle power let it rain down
The chorus is a cry to God asking for that huge monumental moment to come through right now.   I enjoy the present tense of this chorus and it can definitely lead to a congregational moment asking God to pour out His power through His truth in a service.  It also leads to someone who is desperate and needs a victory when everything around them seems unstable or precarious at best.   It is a declaration that we have a God that can and does win the victory through Christ.    My favorite part of this is the, "Only in You and with You" line.   Our only hope is Jesus.   There is no other chance we have in this life other than in Christ.   It feels like a declaration of overcoming that we find in Romans 8.   The Apostle Paul lists all the dangers in this world - tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword.   Then is Romans 8:37, "No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us."    This resonates with truth that nothing can stop our God, no matter how bleak things look.
Oh the fires around are raging
I feel the heat at every turn
But I've heard that You're in it with me
So now by faith I'm standing on Your word
Yes, in Your name I know I won't be hurt
This next verse continues the theme of odds being stacked against us.   Here it turns to another picture from the Old Testament and the Fiery Furnace.   Faced with certain death they survived due to the goodness of God being with them in the furnace and keeping them from being burned.   They stood and were willing to give their lives by standing on God's Word and we should as well in a culture today that is turning more and more away from Christ and His Word.
As long as You're in it
The story's not finished
I know you've overcome
So I know I overcome
The bridge of this song is repeated over and over and builds with strength and truth the more you are reminded of it.   As long as Jesus is in our story we have hope.   Hope is one of the great words in the English language.   It is what keeps us going on despite the dark reality of our current situation.  Just a small piece of the hope of Christ is powerful and tells us that our story is not finished.  In fact we know that Jesus has overcome this world and then in Him, through Him we know we too have overcome.    Worship leaders can latch on to this bridge as a resilient hope that we know without a doubt that with Christ in our midst there is nothing He can't do.
The cross stands before me
It is finished, it is done
Yeah I heard you told death it was over
So in Your name I'll claim this fight is won

Finally the song ends by singing another verse, which is just a quiet reflection on the fact that Jesus stood before the cross.  The culmination of God's love shown for us as He went to the cross to die for our sin.   He completed the work and put an end to death.   He is the name above every name.    Philippians 2:10-11, "So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

We are given a victory that we could never have earned on our own.   Salvation comes through the gift of God sending His son to rescue people from certain eternal death.    Romans 5:8, "He demonstrates His own love for us that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."  God took care of the battle and the insurmountable obstacle of sin before us.  Therefore we hold on the victory in Christ and give Him all the glory for making a way when there seems to be no way.

In Him,

Rev. Dwight Hedges
